The statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague is located inside the Church of the Virgin Mary Victorious in the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana) of the city and is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. The origins of this religious building date back to the 17th century when a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity was built here by the Lutherans in 1613.. The Church of Our Lady Victorious – an early Baroque building in the Lesser Quarter below Petřín Hill is famous for its statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, from Spain, donated to the Carmelites by Polyxena of Lobkowicz (1628). The Infant Jesus has two crowns and 46 dresses, which is changed about 10 times a year according to old traditions.

In 1635, peace came to Prague and the Carmelites returned. One of them, Father Cyril, who had previously received great spiritual help through his devotion to the Infant of Prague, sought the statue and found it amidst the rubbish. Overjoyed, he again placed the statue in the oratory. Father Cyril knelt in prayer before the small statue.. The statue was becoming so popular, that the Bohemian Empress Marie Terezie donated a specially made dress to the Infant Jesus of Prague in 1754. You can see the dress on display in the church museum. Unfortunately, the empress’s son Josef II abolished monasteries, shortly after he became king in 1780 and the church and monastery fell into decay.
